Music

Music is a core part of the enjoyment of school life. Music serves to feed the soul and is a core part of culture and celebrations in school and in our world. In assemblies and in class, children will sing and recite rhymes. Children will have opportunity to perform as part of other lessons within our Enquiry Approach to curriculum delivery. There are seasonal performances held for parents and our wider community, both in school and in our neighbourhood.

In addition to a holistic approach within our school, we ensure that we teach skills in a progressive way and offer opportunity for children to create, to participate and to evaluate as part of a structured curriculum.

We use ‘Kapow’ to support our teaching of music (from September 2023). This decision was made to ensure a consistent and cohesive approach to the teaching of music skills across the whole school, regardless of teacher specialism.

Kapow covers the following skills:

  • Performing
  • Listening
  • Composing
  • The history of music (KS2)

with the overarching Inter-related dimensions of music (or the elements of music), which is knowledge based.

The inter-related dimensions of music are:

  • Pitch
  • Duration
  • Dynamics
  • Tempo
  • Timbre
  • Texture
  • Structure
  • Appropriate musical notation

There are a number of units per year group, which are taught as a discrete subject within our curriculum.
